General Motors and Samsung SDI have signed a binding agreement to build a $4.2 billion battery manufacturing facility in Indiana. The plant is expected to create 3,200 jobs and begin producing cells by late 2028, supplying GM's next generation of Ultium-based vehicles.
The 50-50 joint venture will produce prismatic cells with a target annual capacity of 50 GWh. This output could power roughly 500,000 vehicles per year, significantly expanding GM's domestic battery supply chain.
Indiana Governor praised the investment as transformative for the state's manufacturing corridor. The facility will also include a recycling center designed to recover up to 95% of critical minerals from end-of-life batteries.
