General Motors and Hyundai Motor Group have announced a landmark joint venture to build a $4.5 billion solid-state battery manufacturing plant in Tennessee. The facility is expected to begin production by 2029 and supply cells for both companies' next-generation electric vehicles.

Solid-state batteries promise significantly higher energy density, faster charging, and improved safety compared to current lithium-ion technology. The partnership aims to achieve cost parity with conventional batteries by 2031.

Industry analysts see the move as a direct response to Toyota's aggressive solid-state battery timeline and growing competition from Chinese automakers.
