The United Auto Workers union has filed paperwork to hold a representation election at Hyundai's Montgomery, Alabama assembly plant, escalating the union's campaign to organize foreign-owned automakers operating in the southern United States.

Union organizers claim that over 55 percent of the plant's 3,200 workers have signed authorization cards expressing interest in UAW representation. The push follows last year's successful organization drives at several other manufacturers.

Hyundai has responded by stating it respects its employees' rights while emphasizing the competitive wages and benefits already provided at the facility.
