The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has proposed a rule that would require all new passenger vehicles sold in the United States to include automatic emergency braking systems by model year 2029.

The proposed standard mandates that AEB systems must function at speeds up to 62 mph and detect pedestrians in both daylight and nighttime conditions. Current voluntary adoption sits at approximately 85 percent of new vehicles.

NHTSA estimates the mandate would prevent roughly 24,000 crashes and 700 fatalities annually once fully implemented across the fleet. Public comments on the proposal will be accepted through July 15.
